For me the holy grail of underpants! I’ve been looking for a woven fabric pattern for knickers because I make all my own clothes on ancient straight stitch treadle and hand crank machines. I can use a zigzag attachment but it’s not the easiest to use with elastic. I’m a 22 so I graded these up a couple of sizes. I then added a 1.2 cm additional allowance around the waist and the legs of the pieces. That way I can sew the whole thing straight stitch by making elastic casings at the waist and legs and threading the elastic through rather than sewing it on with a zigzag. It works brilliantly. They are so comfortable and I can make them in pure cotton which I love. I’ve got multiple pairs now in tiny gingham, seersucker, lawn and cotton sateen. Susan advised me that you don’t need to cut these on the bias either, so I didn’t and that saves fabric.
If I have one request it would be to make the pattern in larger sizes as I think larger people like myself would find these incredibly comfortable without looking frumpy.
The search for the perfect knickers is over!
