Sewing Adventures – Darcy Boxers Christmas Edition

Feeling the pre Christmas pressure? wanting to make something useful at the last minute? The Darcy Boxer Shorts have got your back!

This cute Christmas edition pair make for a great present and I know some families have the tradition of matching pyjamas for everyone to wear Christmas morning. Add a simple white tank top and Christmas themed Darcy Boxer Shorts and you will be picture perfect in no time.

To make these even more gift ready I’ve made a very simple drawstring bag to hold the boxers. I thought you could use the drawstring as eco wrapping or it would make a great alternative to hanging up a stocking?

Pattern: The Darcy Boxer Shorts from Measure Twice Cut Once

Fabric: Australian Christmas themed fabric from Spotlight, elastic from Prym, drawcord for bag from Pitt Trading, buttons from Rozelle Markets.

Sewing Adventures – Darcy Shorts Vroom Vroom edition

The Darcy Boxers are by far my most popular pattern, no doubt fuelled by the fact it’s FREE but also because it makes wonderful presents for everyone in your life.

I’ve been getting in some extra Christmas sewing with this cute animal on mopeds fabric I had left over from another project. Turns out I had enough to fit a pair of Darcy’s and my Prym elastic was the perfect colour match.

This Prym elastic is the business when it comes to making boxer shorts look and feel like professional ready to wear garments. Soft and super plush it’s a dream to wear. Sewing wise I’ve found it good but a few pointers. It does not like being unpicked. It’s so plush the stitches sink right in which is great for wearing, not so good for unpicking. It loves a twin needle or a coverstitch machine. I’ve done this one with my coverstitch and it was a dream to attach that way. With the elastic being quite strong I found that stretching it in place worked really well.

I’ve tried the butting together and zig zagging in place elastic method but have found that just a straight stitch then folding over and topstitching in place. Works just as well and looks neat. Also handy for when you don’t have matching thread to hand.

The finishing touch was these vintage red plastic buttons I picked up at Rozelle Markets.

Sewing Adventures: Free Darcy Boxer Shorts Pattern

The Darcy Boxer shorts are one of my all time most downloaded patterns, am sure its 98% because it’s free and about 2% because it’s the pattern the person wanted? regardless it is a fabulous pattern that makes up in no time, takes a minimal amount of fabric and results in awesome shorts for yourself or to use as a gift.

These ones are intended for a gift. We are way behind on birthdays for the entire family this year so I’m trying to get ahead of the curve and get some Christmas sewing/whenever we see them next sewing in. When you don’t live near your family you sometimes find yourself giving and receiving presents at odd times of the year.

This is a lovely dense Japanese woven cotton I got at Pitt Trading. The tiny diamond pattern is perfect for an understated pair of boxers. I’ve gone with French seams throughout because a) I felt like being fancy and b) I currently only own white or black overlocking thread and well that’s not close enough for my colour matching loving heart. So French seams it was.

It’s been a little while since I made a pair with a fly so I had to go back and check my own notes. Apart from a slightly tricky fly/French seam junction point it was a straight forward sew.

For the elastic I jumped at the chance to delve into my Prym box of goodies and use this ultra plush yet firm elastic. It’s so lush and perfect for these boxers. Because I wanted to practice more with my coverstitch I used it to apply the elastic. It was a little finicky but now that I’ve done it once am sure I’ll be good for next time. Plus the stitching looks invisible!

All in all a pretty lovely make and a great example of “Everyone deserves pretty Lingerie”

Fabric: made by Sevenberry sold at Pitt Trading waist elastic from Prym

Changes: French seams throughout, nice change but am unsure I would do that again?

Sewing Adventures – teaching and more knickers

I hope everyone has had a lovely weekend? Our weather has continued to be stunning so I managed to fit in a run and I got out on the bike too! Am so so glad I’m finally on the mend after being sick.

My weekend started off with a blast on Friday night with a Spoolettes meet up, we got to see the lovely Carmen’s drawing exhibition at Since I left you. They are stunning and I highly recommend getting there for a look. Meeting up with the sewing ladies is always a pleasure and I left feeling inspired to know such a talented group.

Saturday I did some sewing that wasn’t knickers! shock horror I know. I haven’t finished that one yet though so you will have to wait a bit longer to see the finished garment.

Sunday I taught a make your own knicker class at Sew Make Create and after some no shows and last minute cancellations ended up with a one on one class. Was actually pretty fun to teach just one person.

So as to not leave you completely bereft of new sewing here are some knickers I finished up last week.

Two pairs of The Georgiana Knickers

Georgiana french fronts

Georgiana scissors

A pair of The Lizzie Knickers with a vintage lace trim

Lizzie lace

and a 2nd pair of The Lizzie Knickers where I am testing out a new way of attaching the lace. It looks super cute but I’m not happy with the topstitching technique yet so I’ll keep working on that.

lizzie frills

and a pair of The Darcy Boxers for a friend recovering from surgery and in much need of some cute shorts to wear. Don’t forget to pick up your FREE boxer short pattern, we’ve been seeing some fantastic versions of it being made up.

FREE pattern thanks to Peppermint Magazine

Sometimes things happen that are just really awesome, and this is one of those things. Last week we told you the pattern was available and now here is a bit more of the back story on how it all came about.

When we released the patterns I got in touch with Peppermint magazine to see if they would be interested in featuring them? Not only were they interested they wanted a design they could offer as a free PDF download as part of their Sewing School.

Yes! how exciting to be able to share a pattern with everyone.

We decided to work on a unisex pattern. With a few changes it goes from a standard men’s boxer short to a pretty women’s boxer perfect for bed time. I made up some samples for a photoshoot and sent them up to the Peppermint magazine office.
