Beginner Sewing – How to sew Not Paper Towels

Join me, Susan from Measure Twice Cut Once, as I take you through how to make Not Paper Towels, these are a great eco friendly sewing product that helps you reduce the amount of single use paper you use in the kitchen.

Once sewn they can be used in the place of paper towels then throw them in the wash to use again and again. Your best fabric choice is some cotton flannelette (try using old flannel sheets or pillowcases if you can’t find the fabric). You’ll be learning how to cut a straight line, sew a straight line, turn corners and finish the edges with a zig zag to help with longevity and reduce fraying in the wash.

The pattern is available from the Measure Twice Cut Once website https://www.measuretwicecutonce.com.a…

2022 is my year of taking the Scary out of Sewing! I want as many people as possible to take up sewing so they can create, make, mend and more. To help take away the scary, every Friday there is going to be a new video with accompanying pattern for a project entirely aimed at beginners. Each week there will be different techniques to learn or go over and it’s going to be a super fun way to grow your sewing skills.

Beginner Sewing – How to sew a Door Snake or Draft Excluder

Join me, Susan from Measure Twice Cut Once, as I take you through how to sew a Door Snake.

Door snakes are a wonderfull way to cut down on your bills, they keep warm air in a heated house and keep cool air from escaping in an air conditioned house. Plus they are a great way to use up the fabric scraps you end up accumulating during sewing.

We will be learning how to sew straight lines turn a corner, sew and end closed and a useful way to use up fabric scraps. It’s a nice way to start building up your skills and potentially cut down your bills all at once.

For experienced sewers they are a great way to use up leftover scraps of fabrics and they make great presents for young and old.

2022 the year of Taking the Scary out of Sewing

2022 is my year of taking the Scary out of Sewing!

I want as many people as possible to take up sewing so they can create, make, mend and more.

To help take away the scary, every Friday there is going to be a new video on YouTube with accompanying pattern for a project entirely aimed at beginners. Each week there will be different techniques to learn or go over and it’s going to be a super fun way to grow your sewing skills.

As often as I can on Wednesdays there will be a hint or tip showing you how to do an aspect of sewing. These will go from absolute beginners to advanced so be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss out.

Then on Thursdays there will be the usual unboxing, sewalongs, livestreams and more. All of it aimed to make sewing as accessible as possible so you can start, continue or grow your sewing journey.

YouTube livestream Tonight 6th September at 8pm AEST

Today I’m trying something new and going with a YouTube livestream at 8pm tonight. I’ll be unboxing the August subscription sewing box from The Lingerie Society from Pitt Trading as well as answering questions about the box and sewing/lingerie sewing in general.

You can join in here

We have been in lockdown here in Sydney and I’ve been thinking of new ways to talk about sewing and teach without the benefit of inperson classes. I’ve also been really struggling to get eyes on any of my Instagram posts as I don’t do things such as Reels and IGTV. To me they feel transitory and content for contents sake but in no real benefit to either me or other sewers. It’s not like I can go “oh I saw this wonderful tutorial but I can’t remember who did it?” you can’t search it, it can’t be easily found and if it was in a story it disappears in 24 hours. It was making me feel all a bit useless.

So instead of learning silly dances (trust me no one needs to see that) or spend hours producing worthless transitory content I’ve decided to post tutorials and how to’s on YouTube so you have a visual, searchable, saveable way of learning and growing your sewing skills. I’m really hoping this works and it would be wonderful if it encourages more people to sew or even just regular sewers to sew more often.

Teaching at Camp Stitch!

Camp stitch was a blast! A very hectic full on blast but still so much fun!

Camp Stitch was dreamed up by a lovely group of Sydney sewers who put in all the hours to plan, book and make a sewing retreat happen.
Due to a jam picked schedule I couldn’t stay for the whole weekend, so my plan was to catch the train down from Sydney then uber or cab from train to the venue. Getting up super early I headed to the station and enjoyed a leisurely train journey of a few hours to get to the station. A completely unattended station in the middle of the Bush. It was utterly beautiful and not a person to be seen.

I tried an Uber which I had been checking at the same time for the last few weeks and each time it had listed one as available. None available. Ok use the booking function to book one. What the booking function doesn’t tell you is that it take more than half an hour to tell you if the booking is accepted or not.
In the meantime I’ve sent a message to Courtney saying I’m at the station and trying to get to them.
She gives me the number of the local cab company I call them and they have no cabs within an hours drive of where I am. Booking function time on uber runs out with no one taking the booking.
Buzz Courtney back and she says stay there am sending someone to pick you up.
Natasha comes 15 minutes later to pick me up and tell me all that’s been happening at the camp since it opened the night before.
Getting to the venue I have enough time to duck to the bathroom before I went to class. I had by far the biggest class and it was lovely to see them all set up and waiting for me.
We leapt straight in to making jeans by setting aside the instructions and following a production style order of assembly I had put together. It makes the process of making much faster meaning we could attempt the task of a pair of jeans in a day.
With plenty of new to me sewers it was great to talk to people as the class progressed. Thankfully for me everyone already had a good command of their machines and terminology so it was easier to demo and talk people through a step and then let them go and do it.
By lunch time we had baste fitted everyone with the majority of people needing a little bit of alteration but not too much major issues.
Everyone was finding rigid high waisted denim very constrictive after years of wearing lower waists or ones with plenty of spandex in them but despite the initial “Ohh that’s tight” type feeling everyone was super happy.
We worked hard and I wasn’t surprised to see some very exhausted looking faces at the end of the day and we almost made it? Most people just had the waistbands to go. So not quite totally finished but I was still super happy with how far we had all got.
After we were packed up I had a tiny bit of time to say hi to some of the other teachers and then it was back to the station to a very packed train home again. Thankfully my machine was easy to carry in my Prym carry bag.
Tiring but lots of fun and a great feeling of pride and accomplishment at what the amazing sewers achieved in a day. Seeing all the finished pieces on Instagram has been awesome fun too!
Thanks for having me Camp Stitch!

Swimwear class at Bobbin and Ink

Just finished a fabulous weekend teaching at Bobbin and Ink. We did an intensive swim weekend where it was 2 full days ouf all things swimwear.

The class was keen and even went home and cut out more things on the Saturday night so it was a hive of activity.
Over the weekend there were
2 x Henrietta swimsuits
1 x Anne swimsuit
1 x Soma bikini by Papercut patterns
1 x retro big4 bikini
1 x Listte B6358 bikini
And 2 more rashies cut out as well

With such a variety being made there was plenty of fit issues to work through to ensure that every suit perfectly matched its wearer. Lots of fabrics to be talked through with hints and tips on how to best apply elastics to differing fabrics and so much more.

A thoroughly fun weekend!

If you want to make your own swimsuit keep an eye on the Bobbin and Ink website and follow them on Instagram for more of my upcoming classes.

New Bralet workshop dates and other classes

I hope everyone is having a fabulous week? We’ve been indulging a mini break with some time off to enjoy Sydney. So far we have walked through the city, Barrangaroo, Rose and Rushcutters Bay, been to the zoo, I went paddleboarding in a new spot in the harbour and just generally enjoyed having a bit of a relax.

However I interrupt all this relatxation to bring you exciting news of a new bralet workshop date and some details on other places you can find me teaching classes and workshops. IMG_8814

New Bralet workshop will be on the 18th of September. You can find out all the specifics here. I will cover the techniques you need to get started with stretch, lingerie elastic and how to get the best results. The last one was lots of fun with some really beautiful bralets being made and much new found confidence for sewing lingerie.

If you are a beginner sewer you can now come learn from me at Bobbin and Ink where I will be taking their Clothes Making for Beginners Class. The course schedule is a great way to learn your way around your machine and proceed into making garments. It should be lots of fun and I’m looking forward to working in their great space. (image courtesy of Bobbin and Ink). We are talking about doing more classes and workshops together too covering lots of sewing skills.

If you fancy a whole weekend of sewing you can participate in the Make, Sew & Gather retreat being held in Sydney on the 28th to 30th of October. I’ll be there on the Sunday to take you through an entire day of Lingerie sewing. Lots of classes covering, sewing, knitting and other skills are on offer throughout the event. More details can be found here.

retreat

As always if there is anything in particular you would like to learn you can book a private lesson with me or if you have an idea for a workshop just email me (link in sidebar) and I’ll try and make that happen.
