Sewing Adventures: Euler bra and Delphine thong

Recently a friend was lamenting the lack of cool lingerie that covered the tummy and yet still looked youthful. Naturally I knew I could sew a solution and because it was for a friend I knew I’d make her a matching set.

The Euler bra by Sophie Hines was an obvious choice as I’ve made it before and the shape is so modern it automatically makes any set look very contemporary.

It also gave me a good excuse to buy the Delphine high waist thong by Ohhh Lulu  I’d seen it on instagram and liked the shape, plus I thought it would fulfill the covered tummy option my friend wanted.

The Euler went together with no problems at all, I did add a touch of lace trim to the cup seam just to make it match the knickers a little more. The fabric is a sensitive jersey from Pitt Trading. Elastics and trims from my stash.

Delphine was easy to sew once I checked the instructions! I went with the added lace covered back and initially had the thong pinned in the wrong section. That looked odd so I checked the instructions, realised my mistake and once I had it attached in the right place it all went together well. It really is a lovely pattern and I was so pleased with how  they look.

I really like the lace across the back and think its super flattering as well as a great way to use up smaller lace leftovers or splash out on a small amount of a very fancy lace.

Pattern: Euler bra by Sophie Hines and Delphine Thong by Ohhh Lulu

Fabric: burgundy sensitive Lycra from Pitt Trading, lace from Pitt Trading, elastics and trims from my stash

Alterations: added lace to cup seam of Euler Bra

Everyone deserves Pretty Lingerie: Seamwork Alamda robe

The moment I saw the Seamwork Alamda regrammed by Sophie from Ada Spragg I knew I had to give it a try, I really liked the sleeves and front tie and was smitten.
Cue a few weeks after that and this gorgeous silk came into Pitt Trading. Besides the lilac there is nothing here I normally like, peach, animal print all usually end in a big NO from me. This however I found irresistible. So I grabbed some.
In the meantime I’d read a few reviews and almost all of them complained about how short the gown was. Now not being blessed in the leg department I didn’t think I had much to worry about but when I cut it out I cut to the very longest length possible.
Then like so many great projects it got packed into the “current projects” box and left for a year. Not the best that’s for sure.
Then a few weeks ago knowing I was bound for hospital, I grabbed it from it’s super large zip lock bag, French seamed the sides, shoulders and attached the bands and created the bands. It took like no time at all! Seriously fast make.

I didn’t like the way the neckline was finished by just turning it under and topstitching. It seemed a bit down market for a garment that is a huge fabric eater and due to the fact I used silk I wanted a better finish. So I cut bias strips and created my own binding. Silk bias binding is certainly a thing you cannot rush so I spent an enjoyable afternoon carefully ironing it into place.
The bias finish went on really well except I want to do a better mitre on the corners.
I also cut the front ties longer, in fact I cut them the entire width of the fabric. This allows me to either wrap it around me or tie it in a very huge looping bow at the front. It’s cute but I probably wouldn’t do this next time as if you are just quickly throwing the gown on you can trip over the long ties.

Overall I really like it as a gown, it has good coverage but allows for plenty of movement, the silk is wonderfully lightweight yet keeps you warm and the whole thing packs to practically nothing.
Definite win and would make again.

The weather has been atrocious the last few days and I’ve missed getting some extra photos of this make, am hoping I can add some more in soon!

Pattern: Seamwork Almada very luxurious would make again
Alterations: narrow bias binding to finish neckline and front edges, super long front ties
Fabric: Designer silk from Pitt Trading

Everyone deserves Pretty Lingerie Week 2017

It’s back! a whole week of pretty lingerie because everyone deserves to have pretty things!

Lots planned for this week to show off some of my more recent makes, there’s been plenty of robe wearing going on here, so I’ll have a run down of a few patterns that I’ve used and some other bits and pieces that I’ve made. The whole point of the week is to encourage everyone to grab some pretty fabric and a pattern of their choice and make something just for them. Go on and give it a go, I know you will enjoy it.

Plus just for fun a good old fashioned blog button

Everyone deserves Pretty Lingerie – Bra Kit Sale

Throughout the whole fortnight I’m having a sale on bra kits. We had a slight glitch with the system in the last 48 hours where some international customers were getting slugged huge amounts for postage. So I’ve now changed it so international postage is now a flat rate of $15 AUD. I wish I could get it lower but sadly that’s how much I get charged for it. Good news is that because it’s a flat rate it won’t increase the more you buy. So either stock up or grab some friends and pool your purchases into one order.

Everyone Deserves Pretty Knickers week – round up

2015-knickersweek_header

So Everyone Deserves Pretty Knickers week has been and gone and I didn’t get to even a fraction of the things I had planned. Life stuff got in the way and ever since I’ve been so busy I haven’t had a chance to get back to the blog.

Thanks so much to everyone who joined in, I sincerely hope you’ve added a few more pretty knickers to your lingerie drawer.

Despite all the life dramas of the week I did manage to squeeze in a tiny amount of sewing time and got 3 new pairs finished. These were all part of my stash busting efforts so I was using fabrics and trims I had on hand.

Next year I’ll be looking forward to lots of fun stuff when we have our next Everyone Deserves Pretty Knickers Week!

Sewing Adventures: stash busting (even the crazy stuff)

sewingknickers_header

Stash busting sewing was in full force this weekend using up some cute polka dots and checks into a few pairs of knickers.

The Lizzie Knickers with in check with elastic and lace from the stash. I can never get these to sit straight for a photo but they are very cute to wear.

pinkweb

The Georgiana Knickers using up the Kermit the frog green crazy coloured elastic. Because when you are serious about stash busting it all has to be used at some point?

blackweb

Closing in on yet another full year of stash busting and it doesn’t feel yet like I’m making a big difference? Am hoping the last few months of the year result in some big amounts being used or that when I re shuffle everything it will take up less fabric tubs than it currently does? Here’s hoping?

Edit Note: the original version of this post had the black knickers incorrectly listed as The Charlotte Knickers. They are in fact The Georgiana Knickers, a more bikini brief style than the fuller more coverage version that is The Charlotte. Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused. I can only attribute the mistake to me being very tired and not thinking clearly.

Sewing Adventures: Baseball Singlet as pyjamas

bowbaseball_header

I really like pretty pyjamas, and yet I don’t own any? This hasn’t really bothered me until lately and I realised how bad my pj’s had gotten. I kept saying oh I’ll buy some and then never finding ones I liked or walking away from the store thinking I can make that. So I rummaged in the stash and found this cute knit I had picked up from The Remnant Warehouse.

In my quest for prettier nightwear I’m using the Baseball Singlet from the Basics Collection.

Basics collection_ baseball singlet

Made up as per the instructions. I experimented with a different kind of decorative stretch stitch my machine has. No reason other than I was curious to see how it would work and I thought it was fun.

Baseball singlet

For  the hem, armholes and neckline I didn’t overlock/serge the edges like I normally would as the fabric is quite fine. Instead I made sure the decorative stitch was catching the turned under amount and finishing it all for me in one go.

baseball singlet interior

It worked really well, especially on the curved hem. It’s a great way to finish fine knits, all you need to do is experiment with the stitch types and lengths. Oh and press the hem well before stitching so you can get the stitching in a nice straight line.

I love being able to make these simple things that honestly I used to buy and always felt bad because they were so cheap and after a few washes just look horrible. Now I can use up prints in the stash or keep an eye out for cute knits and have a bit of fun experimenting with them.

It would be a nice introduction to anyone wanting to sew knit fabrics as there are few seams and a variety of finishes to choose from. For more experienced sewers it’s a great quick make with loads of satisfaction in being able to whip something up and then move onto the next project.

I hope everyone else enjoys making them as much as I do.

Am already thinking a pair of The Mary Knickers in the same fabric would make an awesome matchy matchy set and perhaps the perfect summer pyjamas?

Everyone Deserves Pretty Knickers – Design

What a week! Seriously thank you all so much, I hope you have had as much fun as I have.

We’ve had sewalongs, talked about inspiration, I’ve taught a knicker making class here in Sydney and now it’s time to wrap up the week.

While it’s sad to be wrapping up, this isn’t the end of the knicker making journey. I’m really hoping that this week has got you thinking about the smallest garments in your handmade wardrobe. While they may be small they need not be boring.

Every Measure Twice Cut Once pattern includes an extra we like to call The Designer Manual. This multipage manual gives you suggestions on how to take your standard pattern and push it further. How to add trims and extras to turn them into original creations.

So you can take a standard pair of knickers and add

The-Charlotte-Knicker-variations

The key is to make them suit your style, you can have them as lacy, sexy, cotton, practical or as frilly as you want. Now that the sewalongs have shown you how to construct the knickers themselves we will be showing you some more of these designer extras as tutorials in coming months. We also have plenty of other big things planned that we can’t wait to share. First thing we will be doing is creating a sewalong page on the site. This will make it an easy reference point for when you are next making knickers.

Become your own designer and have fun because Everyone Deserves Pretty Knickers.
