Sydney Fabric Destash – Sunday 3rd of April

This Sunday we are having a fabric destash event. Super simple, grab some pieces you don’t want from your own stash. Bring them along and swap them for pieces from other peoples stash’s!

It’s a gold coin entry to get in and any leftover fabric, patterns or trims are getting donated to charity. Hope to see you on Sunday.

Sewing Adventures – Simplicity 1652 and 1873 mashup

I fell in love with the texture and heft of this fabric from Pitt Trading.

fabric

It’s wonderfully thick and strong, verging on canvas like. However I was completely perplexed as to what to make from it? I knew I wanted a dress but the fabric isn’t flowing or likely to gather well?

After some time, I decided to use the bodice from Simplicity 1652

1652

mixed with skirt from Simplicity 1873.

1873

Construction wise it was really straight forward. I didn’t use any lining as it would make the dress too hot.  Here it is at work in the Pitt Trading store.

simplicity 1652 plus 1873

The internal neckline and back cut out are all finished with bias binding. I didn’t have enough of the one colour so it’s a bit of a mish mash of patterns which I really like!

The invisible zip went in like a dream. Am so glad I have my technique figured out for those now it makes everything easier when it comes to finishing up a dress.

invisible zip

I was hoping to get a back shot of the dress today but it is all grey and rainy. So I popped it on my mannequin so you could see the back cut out. I’m bigger than my mannequin so the dress doesn’t fit her but I suspect that  gape at the zip occurs on me too and that’s one of the sections I’d pinch out next time I make this one.

Fabric: pink and black cotton from Pitt Trading

Dress Pattern: Simplicity Amazing Fit 1652 and Cynthia Rowley by Simplicity 1873

Alterations:  mixed the 2 patterns together. Next time reduce the back width at the top of the zip by 1cm total and the top of the cut outs by 2cm total.

Sewing Adventures – Mens Jinbei jacket and shorts

Recently I ended up with some unexpected free time so I cut out 3 pairs of shorts for The Englishman and finished the Jinbei jacket that has been cut for ages but needed a band and ties before being finished. These are all just casual around the house pieces. After long cycling rides it’s nice for him to have something comfortable to potter about the house.

jinbei shorts

I used the same pattern I did here. It’s one I picked up from Nomura Tailor in Kyoto for a men’s Jinbei consisting of jacket and shorts/pants.

fabric close up

Shorts 1 – Japanese cotton Lawn from Spotlight. These ended up shorter than expected as the cutting on the fabric piece was so bad by the time I straightened out the grain I was more than 5 cm either end shorter than expected. Still they will be fine for your very hot days in the summer.

Shorts 2 – Navy blue stripe. I picked this up as a remnant at Pitt Trading and I’m fairly sure it’s a Japanese milled fabric. It looks beautiful quality but may need a wash or two to soften up a bit more?

Shorts 3 – blue and white stripe denim. Lightweight fabric I picked up forever ago in Cabramatta. I seem to have miles of it so it must’ve been cheap but it’s super quality and am slightly kicking myself for not making a dress from it as well.

jinbei jacket

Jinbei jacket –  I finally seem to have got the sizing right for The Englishman. I need it to be boxy but not swamp him so I cut it slightly narrower through the body but maintained the wider shoulders and boxy arms.

Fabric: various sources – see above

Pattern: Men’s Jinbei from Nomura Tailor

Alterations:  Cut size small width, size Large length in shorts, slight narrowing of hem of jacket.

Sewing Adventures – Soma Swimsuit and Bikini

Over this summer I’ve been making plenty of swimsuits. I’ve taken up paddleboarding which I find it wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable. With views like this it would be hard not to. It also means new outfits were needed.

Sydney Harbour

I enjoy making swimmers and it’s so nice to use the gorgeous prints from Pitt Trading.

lycras from Pitt Trading
One of the styles I tried was the Soma pattern from Papercut patterns. I measured myself, I measured the patterns, I went by the guide and I cut myself the one piece.

papercut patterns Soma swimsuit
It’s huge. Like 2 or 3 sizes too big. It uses none of the lycras stretch at all. When I try it on it feels slack and if I added water it would most certainly fall down. The back gapes open as the cross over straps are not tight enough to sit flat. It’s clearly way too big.

soma back

Not too discouraged I cut out the bikini. I went down a few sizes and tried them on part way through the process and took them in some more. This worked much better, the stretch of the fabric was now being used and they sat firmly. I’d say I ended up cutting an XS which is a bit shocking as I’m not an extra small size.

soma bikiniThis photos is before I added the straps.

Now for the true test, in the water. The bottoms were quite good. I have a slight issue at the lower leg at the back, the elastic tends to fold back when I walk, swim or paddleboard. Not a huge problem but I like my swimmers to stay in place during activities. The bottoms come up nice and high and give good waist coverage.

DCIM119GOPRO
This is a GoPro photo from when I’m out paddleboarding. I like the fish eye effect but it makes for terrible selfies, hence the no photos of me in the bikini shots.

The top was ok, if I make it again I’d potentially do a Full Bust adjustment as I felt less than secure and covered while swimming and moving around. Not badly but just felt like I wanted to keep hiking the top up as I didn’t feel support/covered enough?
Overall the patterns went together well and the instructions were clear. However the sizing doesn’t seem to take into account the stretch of the fabric adequately? I’d certainly recommend trying on your swimwear mid way through your sewing process and adjust as necessary.

The fold over elastic for the one piece makes getting a neat edge super easy and is a great technique.

soma swimsuit foldover edge

Fabric: Lycra from Pitt Trading

Pattern: Papercut Patterns Soma swimsuit as one piece and bikini.

Alterations:  One Piece – size down a few sizes, fill in back panel and not have the thin cross over straps. More support there would be helpful in not having the swimsuit move around so much during activities.

Bikini – full bust adjustment on top and potentially add to the cups to give more of a full coverage? Reshape lower back leg so it doesn’t fold over.

I received a letter from Evelyn Howard a couple of days after her departure, telling me she was working as a nurse at the big hospital in Middlingham, a manufacturing town some fifteen miles away, and begging me to let her know if Mrs. Inglethorp should show any wish to be reconciled.

Front View

The only fly in the ointment of my peaceful days was Mrs. Cavendish’s extraordinary, and, for my part, unaccountable preference for the society of Dr. Bauerstein. What she saw in the man I cannot imagine, but she was always asking him up to the house, and often went off for long expeditions with him. I must confess that I was quite unable to see his attraction.

The 16th of July fell on a Monday. It was a day of turmoil. The famous bazaar had taken place on Saturday, and an entertainment, in connection with the same charity, at which Mrs. Inglethorp was to recite a War poem, was to be held that night. We were all busy during the morning arranging and decorating the Hall in the village where it was to take place. We had a late luncheon and spent the afternoon resting in the garden. I noticed that John’s manner was somewhat unusual. He seemed very excited and restless. […] Excerpt From: Agatha Christie. “The Mysterious Affair at Styles.”
